Sequence of the Attack
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the suspect pulled two knives from a shopping bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man who had just exited the subway station and was waiting to cross the street with his wife, striking him in the abdomen. Seconds later, she stabbed a 32-year-old woman, also in the abdomen.
Both victims were taken to the hospital. The woman died from her injuries, while the man remains in stable condition, police said. Authorities have not released the victims' names pending notification of next of kin, and have not confirmed whether they were tourists or residents.
Officers attempted to convince the suspect to drop the knives for several minutes before deploying a Taser. The woman reportedly told them: "I'm not dropping anything, I would rather kill both of you." When the Taser failed to incapacitate her, she walked quickly toward the officers while waving the knives, and two officers then shot her. Bystander video showed her falling to the ground, where an officer handcuffed her before others rendered first aid.
