GenAI.mil expands with OpenAI and xAI tools to accelerate defense operations

The US Department of War has added two new artificial intelligence tools, ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, to GenAI.mil, its centralized portal for commercial frontier AI systems. The additions expand Pentagon access to advanced AI models while keeping sensitive government data off ordinary consumer channels.

The platform, which initially offered Google Gemini, has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users from the department's 3 million personnel, according to official figures.

The move reflects Washington's wider effort to use AI to accelerate the operations of its military establishment and maintain a technological advantage. It also signals the Pentagon's deepening ties with major technology companies, while firms that resist unrestricted military access to their AI systems are being sidelined.

Notably absent from the platform is Anthropic's Claude model, following a dispute between the Pentagon and the AI company over safety guardrails.

New Tools and Platform Expansion

ChatGPT Mil was developed through OpenAI for Government and will offer an experience familiar to commercial ChatGPT users. According to the War Department, the tool will focus on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, and will support document-heavy and routine unclassified work, including administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy.

Grok for Government, from SpaceX's Starshield AI, has been described in more explicitly militarized terms. The department said the tool would enable the US military "to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts, ranging from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply-chain management for logisticians."

The Pentagon has also struck agreements with a growing number of major technology companies, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.

Background on the Dispute With Anthropic

GenAI.mil is designed to provide Pentagon personnel with access to commercial AI models while preventing sensitive government data from passing through ordinary consumer channels. The military platform is exempt from data collection practices that are difficult for users to avoid in consumer technology products.

Anthropic's Claude model is absent from the platform after the Trump administration labeled the company a supply-chain risk. The designation followed Anthropic's refusal to grant the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools, with the company instead demanding certain safety guardrails. Anthropic is currently challenging the designation in court.

According to the War Department's press release, "Starshield AI's Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration." Starshield AI is a secure satellite network that uses SpaceX's existing Starlink technology.

For ChatGPT Mil, additional features are expected to be added over time. The department indicated that the tool will initially support chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, with a focus on administrative and planning functions.
