The United States screened a record 2.99 million air travelers in one day.

The United States has achieved a new milestone in airport passenger screening.

According to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a record 2.99 million airline passengers were screened on Sunday, surpassing the previous record set in May.

TSA expects passenger numbers to exceed 3 million on Friday, as many Americans begin their travels ahead of Independence Day on July 4.

During the period from Thursday through Monday, TSA forecasts screening more than 32 million people, reflecting a more than 5 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

“We anticipate this summer to be our busiest ever, with peak travel typically occurring around the Independence Day holiday,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske in a statement.

“This year, we have significantly reduced attrition rates and increased recruitment due to the TSA Compensation Plan funded in the congressional budget and signed into law by President Biden. The movement of the traveling public indicates a robust economy. We, along with our airline and airport partners, are prepared to manage the surge in passenger volumes.”

In 2021, TSA has marked seven of its top 10 busiest days as travel continues to rebound from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
