Rising Violence in Northwestern Pakistan

Attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have increased sharply in recent months. Last week, a surge of attacks and suicide bombings targeting police was reported in the neighbouring Bannu district. The violence has accelerated significantly since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, with Pakistani authorities alleging that armed groups operate from sanctuary across the border.

The Centre for Research and Security Studies recorded a rise in fatalities from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 last year. Separately, the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies reported that attacks nationwide increased by 34 percent over the same period.

Cross-Border Tensions and International Concerns

The Pakistani government has long accused Afghanistan of harbouring armed groups that launch attacks on Pakistani soil. The Afghan Taliban government denies any involvement and maintains that the violence is an internal Pakistani matter. The dispute has escalated into direct military action, with Pakistan conducting repeated air raids on Afghan territory that it says target militant positions, and Afghanistan responding with cross-border fire.

The United Nations has recorded hundreds of Afghan civilian deaths from those strikes this year, further deepening the rift between the two neighbouring countries.

Ongoing Security Operations

A search operation remains underway in the area surrounding the checkpoint in Tank district as security forces work to identify and apprehend any additional suspects. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether further arrests have been made or whether additional threats have been identified in the region.
